Finding the right family vacation that pleases older kids requires careful planning. Latin America is a great choice for teenagers because there is so much to see and do.

Cruising to Latin American destination points is an easy way to travel with children, especially older children who can safely have free reign of the ship between port landings.

The Mexican Riviera for Sun, Surf and Snorkeling

Going by ship or air, a trip to the Mexican Riviera will provide memories to last a lifetime. Consider a trip to Puerta Vallarta, a lively tourist spot and, definitely, family friendly. Teenagers can enjoy the white beaches and turquoise waters while plugged into their iPods. If they get bored, arrange for a fishing expedition to a small village with a stop for lunch on the beach where a local senorita will fry their day’s catch, accompanied by tortillas and fresh guacamole. This is sure to please young and old. Kids can snorkel in the deep water lagoons, go surfing and tour the local markets along the cobbled streets of the Malecón while getting a taste of local culture.

Another suggestion is a visit to the more sedate Zhuatanejo for a taste of Old Mexico. It’s just a short car ride from Ixtapa, a tourist spot that pulses with night life for teens who are night owls and want more action.

Costa Rica for the Ecologically Minded Teenager

For teens interested in the ecology, a trip to Costa Rica should head the list. The country has a reputation for ecotourism. An unforgettable experience is exploring the well-protected rainforest with its profusion of plant and animal species.

Ecuador for the Adventurous or Naturalist Teen

For physically active youngsters, there are exciting climbs up volcanic mountains in Ecuador. A three-hour drive from Quito is Cotopaxi, known to be the perfect cone of snow. Chunbirzi is the furthest peak away from the earth’s center. Tungurahua is said to be an easy climb.

Use Ecuador as a jumping off point to the Galapagos Islands, one of the world’s most extraordinary national parks. This is an extraordinary place where older children can get a true taste of, and respect for, nature. They can’t help being impressed by the variety of birds and flora and fauna that similarly astounded Charles Darwin and motivated him to write the Origin of the Species.

Cartegena Will Please Kids Who Like History

An out-of-the way trip to Cartagena, a fortress colonial city in Colombia, is also worth consideration. Cartagena is safe, not overrun with tourists and seeped in history. Parents will find Cartagena to be very manageable since it is self-contained. Teenagers can wander the streets, enjoy excellent local food, and enjoy the night life as the city booms with Latin music and good will. Best of all, this family vacation will not to break the bank.
